1980 - First 2 students began combined M.D./Ph.D. training at UCI

1983 - Beginning of complete financial support for students in combined training

1987 - Establishment of the Medical Scientist Program under the direction of Dr. Paul Sypherd

1989 - Dr. George Gutman became director of the program

1990 - Size of the program was increased to 3 new students per year

1992 - Size of the program was increased to 4 new students per year

1993 - Dr. Alan Goldin became director of the program

1999 - NIH support was initiated with the Medical Scientist Training Program grant

2002 - Size of the program was increased to 6 new students per year
