Hello Prospective Applicant,

Welcome to the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of California, Irvine in beautiful Southern California. Since our first students entered the program in 1980, the UCI MSTP has grown and flourished, with NIH MSTP grant support since 1999. There are currently 94 alumni pursuing their careers at universities, medical centers, companies and other institutions throughout the country. We provide personalized attention by maintaining a relatively small class of six incoming students and providing flexibility in scheduling and curricula.

Our goal is to prepare students to be physician scientists in a broad range of careers by providing opportunities for research training in diverse fields coupled with a solid medical education. Since advances in medicine today can come from any of a wide variety of fields, students in the UCI MSTP can pursue their Ph.D. studies in any graduate program at the university. These include programs in Medicine, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, Information & Computer Sciences, Social Ecology, Social Sciences and Public Health, to name just a few. In addition, students can pursue their research in one of the institutes or centers that combine both research and clinical care, including the Beckman Laser Institute, the NIH Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Institute for Clinical & Translational Science and the Sue & Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center. UCI has a tradition of collaboration among faculty and students throughout the campus and many of the MSTP students have been involved in clinical or translational team science.

The campus is located near the ocean between Los Angeles and San Diego. The beaches of Southern California make a beautiful backdrop for our academic and recreational pursuits.
