UC Irvine is home to a host of excellent research opportunities. Among them is the highly publicized stem cell center that aims to treat a plethora of diseases using this intriguing new technology. In particular, Dr. Hans Keirstead has been investigating their use in treating acute spinal cord injury.
On the biomedical engineering side of the spectrum there is the Beckman Laser Institute, one of the foremost labs in the field of Optical Imaging. Among the exciting projects here are efforts to monitor chemotherapy treatment efficacy using diffuse optics.
UC Irvine also boasts an impressive neurology department. Included in this department is UCI mind which was recently awarded a 20 million dollar grant to utilize stem cells for treatment of Alzheimers disease.
